On Azenco's line, the manual K-BANA and the motorized R-BLADE share the same aluminum construction and powder-coating process. The difference isn't material quality. It's control, sizing, and how the roof responds when you're not standing under it.

What's different

How the louvers move. A manual system uses a hand crank to tilt the blades. No motor, no wiring, no electronics. A motorized system uses a concealed motor driving a linkage, operated by remote, wall switch, phone app, or automatic sensor.

Rotation range. Manual louvered roofs generally rotate up to 90 degrees, giving you fully open or fully closed and the positions in between. Motorized systems on the R-BLADE move through a range of 0 to 160 degrees, which allows blade positions past vertical for different light and airflow behavior.

Sizing. This is the constraint people underestimate. Manual systems come in fixed standard sizes, typically 10 by 10 and 12 by 12 feet, which combine modularly side by side, back to back, or into L and U shapes. Published ratings are maximums under standard configurations. The Azenco K-BANA is listed at up to 25 psf snow load and up to 105 mph wind, though you'll find different wind figures across different dealer sites. The R-BLADE is published considerably higher, up to 100 psf snow and 190 mph wind, and it carries a Miami-Dade NOA.

Now compare that to what Twin Falls asks. Inside city limits, the published residential design criteria set a ground snow load of 15 psf with a minimum uniformly distributed design roof load of 25 psf by local ordinance. In unincorporated Twin Falls County, ground snow load is 30 psf. Both jurisdictions use a 115 mph design wind speed, and frost depth is 24 inches.

Those numbers sit close together, and that's the point. Product maximums and code design criteria are not measured the same way, so you cannot line them up in a column and declare a winner. A manual system is a genuinely good fit for plenty of properties here, particularly inside city limits with sheltered exposure and modest spans. Permits: one real advantage for manual

There's a wrinkle here worth knowing.

Inside Twin Falls city limits, a permit is required for all electrical, plumbing, mechanical and gas work, with no size threshold and no exceptions. A motorized pergola is electrical by definition, which settles the permit question before you even discuss square footage.
